The preliminary count of fatal work injuries in the U.S. was 5,071 in 2008, down from a revised total of 5,657 in 2007, according to the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) program. The slowing economy was likely a factor in at least part of the decline. More »

Occupational Injuries and Illnesses by Selected Characteristics

The 2007 rate of nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses requiring days away from work was 122 per 10,000 full-time workers, 4 percent below 2006. The key measure of severity—median days away from work—was unchanged at 7 days. The 2007 rate of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) was 35 cases per 10,000 full-time workers, 8 percent below 2006.
