From January 2024 to January 2025, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 38 metropolitan areas, decreased in 1 area, and was essentially unchanged in 348 areas. The largest over-the-year percentage gains in employment occurred in Barnstable Town, Massachusetts (6.1 percent), Napa, California (5.7 percent), and Rochester, Minnesota (5.3 percent). Employment decreased over the year in Yuma, Arizona (4.1 percent).

An additional 10 metro areas had employment increases of at least 4.0 percent: Ames, Iowa (5.2 percent), Coeur d’Alene, Idaho (5.1 percent), Walla Walla, Washington (4.9 percent), Yuba City, California (4.8 percent), Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey, and St. George, Utah (4.6 percent each), College Station-Bryan, Texas (4.5 percent), Fairbanks-College, Alaska, and Eagle Pass, Texas (4.4 percent each), and Kennewick-Richland, Washington (4.3 percent).

Employment increased in 13 metropolitan areas with a 2020 Census population of 1 million or more and was essentially unchanged in 43 areas. The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment in these large metropolitan areas occurred in Fresno, California (2.6 percent), and Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida (2.2 percent), followed by Raleigh-Cary, North Carolina, and Urban Honolulu, Hawaii (2.0 percent each).
